Selena Gomez has released a new single, Call Me When You Break Up, featuring Gracie Abrams and produced by her fiancé, Benny Blanco. The track, which debuted on February 20, is the latest preview of I Said I Love You First, Gomez and Blanco’s upcoming joint album, set for release on March 21. While the song’s title initially sparked speculation about its subject, Gomez clarified at a recent London listening event that it is about a close friendship rather than a past relationship.
Blending an upbeat melody with introspective lyrics, the single opens with a voicemail message before Gomez sings, “Call me when you break up / I want to be the first one on your mind when you wake up.” Abrams follows with a more reflective verse, contrasting Gomez’s playful approach with lyrics about seeking distractions after heartbreak. The production, marked by soft guitars and a driving drumbeat, balances the song’s wistful themes with a bright, polished pop sound.
The accompanying music video, filmed in a selfie-style format, features Gomez and Abrams singing together in a bedroom, reinforcing the song’s intimate, confessional tone. Blanco makes a brief appearance at the end. Following the song’s release, Gomez shared on Instagram that working on the project was a highlight, while Abrams described the collaboration as an easy and natural process.
I Said I Love You First marks Gomez’s first full-length musical project since Rare (2020) and comes at a significant moment in her career, following her role in the Oscar-nominated film Emilia Pérez. Blanco, a longtime producer with an extensive résumé, described the album as an organic creative effort between the two. “This was just an idea that started in our bedroom, and then it actually was really good,” he said in an interview.
With two singles now released, I Said I Love You First is shaping up to be a deeply personal album for Gomez and Blanco. Call Me When You Break Up is available to stream now.
