The Mercury Prize 2024 Nominees Are In

The Mercury Prize panel released their candidate shortlist for best album by a British or Irish artist. This year, there are eight first-time nominees, including Charli XCX for Brat, Nia Archives for Silence Is Loud, producer Barry Can’t Swim, and The Last Dinner Party, among other emerging artists spanning a range of genres.

Albums released between July 15, 2023, and July 12, 2024, were eligible. Tom Ravenscroft announced the 12 albums up for the award live on BBC Radio 6 Music. Ravenscroft also referenced this year’s independent judging panel, which comprises professionals like Jamie Cullum, MistaJam, and journalist Sophie Alexander.

The winner will be announced in September. This year, the prize failed to find a sponsor, meaning there will be no public presentation ceremony. Mercury Prize reps said other promotional activities will replace the live performances. This is the first time there will be no live show in the 32-year history of the awards.
