Sky Ferreira makes a triumphant return with her new single “Leash,” featured in A24’s upcoming film Babygirl. The track marks Ferreira’s first independent release since splitting from Capitol Records and has been submitted for Best Original Song at the 2025 Academy Awards.
Directed by Halina Reijn and starring Nicole Kidman, Babygirl follows a high-powered CEO’s affair with a younger intern. Ferreira’s “Leash” ties into the film’s themes, with the title reflecting both the movie’s story and Ferreira’s personal struggle for creative freedom. Co-written with Jorge Elbrecht, the song’s retro, uptempo sound emerged from inspiration drawn from the film’s synth line and bass.
Produced in just two weeks, Ferreira called the creative process “good pressure,” saying it forced her to trust her instincts. “I’m responsible for making something for other people besides me,” she shared, reflecting on the challenge of balancing artistic vision with film direction.
Support has poured in from fans and artists alike, including Charli XCX, who tweeted, “Omg stan mode activated.” Ferreira’s last album, Night Time, My Time, released in 2013, has since become a cult favorite. Her decade-long battle for independence from Capitol Records was driven in part by fan advocacy, which she credits for helping her regain control of her career.
With Babygirl set to hit theaters on December 25, Ferreira’s “Leash” is poised for awards season recognition. More than just a song, it’s a statement of her reclaimed artistry and a reminder of her enduring presence in music and film.
