In a cover series for Apple Music x Nashville Sessions, a range of artists such as Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy, and Joyland put their spin on Beyonce’s hits. Despite the artistic spectacle and online discourse criticizing Queen Bee’s place in country music, this cover project shows that these country singers continue to support the artist.
In March, Beyoncé released Cowboy Carter, her solo country-inspired work. The album was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed, and it was very clear that I wasn’t,” Beyoncé commented in an interview. Insiders speculate Beyoncé was referring to her 2016 performance at the Country Music Association Awards, in which she performed the Texas country song “Daddy Lessons” with the Chicks. Cowboy Carter, is Beyoncé’s response, telling folks not to exclude her from any musical apparatus. The vocally versatile album re-imagined American music while remaining politically reserved for Beyoncé.
For these Apple covers, Brittney Spencer and Tanner Adell (who appeared with Kennedy on ‘‘BLACKBIIRD’’ on Cowboy Carter) will also score covers separately, with the two singing ‘Irreplaceable’ and “Drunk In Love.’’ Additionally, BRELAND will sing “Sandcastles,” Madeline Edwards will take on “Halo,” and Joy Oladokun will rework “‘II MOST WANTED” from Cowboy Carter. The promise of more exciting compilations furthers Beyonce’s reign and impact in the country world.
