Perfume Genius, the artistic project of Mike Hadreas, is back with Glory, his highly anticipated new album set to drop on March 28, 2025, via Matador Records. Known for his genre-defying sound and emotionally charged lyrics, Hadreas has once again teamed up with longtime collaborator Blake Mills to produce an album that promises to continue his streak of captivating, deeply personal music.
The first single, “It’s a Mirror,” is out now, accompanied by a stunning video directed by Cody Critchloe, who also worked on the visuals for Perfume Genius’ iconic “Queen.” The song delivers a blend of introspection and unspoken freedom, perfectly encapsulating the themes of isolation and self-reflection that permeate the album. In the track, Hadreas croons, “It’s a diamond, my whole life is/ Open just outside the door,” capturing the feeling of being trapped within a cycle of loneliness, yearning for something different but struggling to break free.
Glory marks a return to a more naturalistic sound for Hadreas, with “It’s a Mirror” offering an intriguing mix of warmth and tension. While the song’s production feels expansive and full of open-road freedom, its lyrical content is fraught with the anxiety and self-doubt that has characterized much of Hadreas’ work. The track’s juxtaposition of serenity and underlying chaos is a testament to Mills’ skill as a producer, who continues to shape-shift and bring out the best in his collaborators. As the first taste of Glory, “It’s a Mirror” is a perfect example of Perfume Genius at his most inspired and vulnerable.
In addition to the album announcement, Perfume Genius has unveiled an extensive North American tour, set to kick off on May 12, 2025, in Healdsburg, California, and conclude on June 27, 2025, in Portland, Oregon. The tour will take Perfume Genius to major cities like San Francisco, Brooklyn, and Chicago, with highlights including a performance at the Brooklyn Paramount on June 10.
