Kendrick Lamar has released the music video for “Squabble Up,” the first visual from his surprise album GNX. Directed by Calmatic, the video is a vibrant tribute to West Coast culture, blending nods to Compton, hip-hop legends, and iconic Black cinema.
In the opening scene, Lamar dons Dodger blue with a matching cap, setting the tone with a nod to Los Angeles pride. A 105 Freeway exit sign roots the video in Lamar’s hometown, while dancers perform West Coast moves, including the Crip Walk. The video is rich with subtle homages, including a tribute to Ice-T’s Power album cover and Radio Raheem’s iconic “love” and “hate” rings from Do the Right Thing. These cultural callbacks seamlessly blend contemporary visuals with history, showcasing Lamar’s artistry and deep ties to his roots. Adding humor, Lamar is seen reading a fictional book, How to Be More Like Kendrick for Dummies.
“Squabble Up” is the first release from GNX, which dropped unexpectedly on November 22, featuring collaborators like SZA and Kamasi Washington. With his Super Bowl Halftime Show performance on the horizon, Lamar continues to prove his ability to create music and visuals that resonate deeply.
