John Mayer: Ready for Battle

John Mayer: Ready for Battle

news_johnmayerCan you really miss someone if they haven’t really left? Fans of John Mayer will have to answer that question when the singer/songwriter releases his new album Battle Studies, November 17.

Though Mayer has not released an album of new material since 2006’s critically-acclaimed Continuum, Mayer is never far from the spotlight, whether it is performing in concert or appearing on TMZ for his habit of dating Hollywood starlets.

On his fourth studio album, the Grammy award winner, returns with a disc whose goal was to incorporate the feel of 1970s and 80s California pop/rock discs, as opposed to his previous effort, which was heavily influenced by R&B and soul music.

“I approach music like a director doing a period piece,” Mayer said. “Where Continuum was R&B and Soul, Battle Studies was written with the timelessness of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac and Neil Young in mind. The melodies and message are concise and from-the-gut with the efficiency of simplicity.”

Mayer worked on the new disc over the course of six months at a private home in California, before moving to Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, California, to complete the disc. The disc was co-produced by Mayer and Steve Jordan, and includes appearances from Taylor Swift (on “Half of My Heart.”)

The singer is playing selected dates – mostly holiday shows and benefits – before embarking on a 2010 world tour, which will find him performing a single show in Australia and four shows in the United Kingdom, before returning to North America for an arena tour that will keep him on the road through the middle of April.

The John Mayer who debuted in 2001 with Room For Squares has grown significantly as a musician in the past decade. One of the rare artists whose ubiquity has neither hurt his popularity nor compromised the quality of his work, Mayer continues to evolve and enthrall, and make believers out of those who questioned whether he would be a one-hit wonder.
