Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen
Working on a Dream
71

The first decade of the new millennium has proven to be the most prolific in the career of Bruce Springsteen. The same artist who once waited seven years between releases has given his fans five albums of new material and three official live releases since 2001. Many will point to the influence of producer Brendan O’Brien, who has worked with Springsteen during this decade, and whose guidance has turned Springsteen from an artist for whom several years between albums was expected to one who is churning out discs nearly as quickly as his fans can digest them.

Unfortunately, for a perfectionist like Springsteen, quality suffers when the goal appears to be quantity, and on most of his non-live releases this decade – the sole exception being the sublime Seeger Sessions disc – have proven to be extraordinarily ordinary; hit-or-miss affairs that will include a track or two that can be added to the pantheon of classic Springsteen tracks, while also including a number of tracks that are either too banal, too overwrought, or just too boring.

Working on a Dream, Springsteen’s 16th studio release, suffers from many of the same problems that have plagued discs like Magic, Devils & Dust, and The Rising, and brings to mind a line from “The River”: “Is a dream a lie that don’t come true, or is it something worse?”

Springsteen’s best tracks have always been those on which the narrator’s focus is razor-sharp, even if the choruses are more accessible (think “Jungleland,” “Rosalita,” “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” and even “Born In the U.S.A.”) Platitudes have never served Springsteen well, and his career-long pattern of avoiding the simple sentiments is what has made him into the music legend he is.

The new disc contains one bona-fide classic (“The Wrestler”; technically a bonus track); several good songs which are bound to stay in the regular rotation for Springsteen fans (“My Lucky Day,” “Working on a Dream,” and “Outlaw Pete,” the latter of which borders on classic status but is retarded by the guitar riff from Kiss’ “I Was Made for Lovin’ You”); a handful of interesting tracks with the potential to grow upon repeated spins (“Queen of the Supermarket,” “This Life,” “What Love Can Do,” and “Kingdom of Days”); the obligatory tribute to the late Danny Federici (“The Last Carnival”; a 30-years-burning-down-the-road companion to “Wild Billy’s Circus Story”); and several clunkers (“Good Eye,” the trite “Tomorrow Never Knows,” and “Surprise Surprise”).

Working on a Dream, the often-upbeat counter to the weightier albums he released earlier in the decade is not a failure – far from it. Most of the tracks about which the listener might have wondered on first blush bloom with repeated spins, and it’s clear that once the tracks are debuted in the live arena, some of them might even become favorites. At the same time, it’s not the ever-elusive conclusion to the mythological “Born” trilogy for which many Springsteen fans have held out, even if only in a dimly-lit corner of their minds. It’s more like the ’69 Chevy with a blown tire that still sounds throaty and inspiring, even if it’s not moving as quickly or as spectacularly as it once did.
