Today former One Direction band member ZAYN is back with his fist solo album Mind of Mine, poised and ready to give other R&B heart-throbs - think Miguel, Usher and The Weekend - a run for their money. Equipped to leave his One Direction days behind, Zayn strays away from his much-beloved carefree pop tunes to bring us a dark and sensual collection of tracks that will undoubtedly leave every girl wishing they could trade lives with Gigi Hadid (not that they didn’t already).
Sexually-charged "Pillowtalk", released 25th March 2016, gave us a taste of what was to expected from Mind of Mine, and boy did we like it. Zayn teased us with racey imagery and X-rated lyrics, singing;
‘nobody but you, body but me, body but us, bodies together’ and ‘reckless behaviour, a place that is so pure, so dirty and raw’ , never-mind dropping the F bomb throughout the track. Debuting at number one in countries including the United States and United Kingdom, Zayn quickly surpassed his ex-bandmates by charting higher than any 1D song released in the US.
The rest of the album serves as a reminder that Zayn’s vocal range and musical style was severely crippled by being a member of a pop-boyband, despite GrooveVolt’s enduring affection for 1D. Songs such as ‘Wrong’ (ft. Kehlani) and ‘Tio’ continue the pulsating, sex-themed, R&B groove and tracks like ‘Fool for You’, ‘Borderz’, ‘Mind of Mind’ and ‘She’ demonstrate Zayn’s new found musical-maturity, making it ever clear that he simply outgrew the likes of Harry, Liam, Louis and Niall.
Even ‘Intermission_Flower’, sung in Urdu, calls attention to another part of Zayn that might have been overlooked during his time in the spotlight - his Muslim faith. Overall, it seems that ‘Mind of Mine’ is an album representing a fresh start for Zayn, revealing the artist and individual he always wanted to be.
