Stella Artois recently sought to bring the one thing New York City doesn’t have – actual stars. Spare the celebrities that live and socialize here, Stella Artois has created a “first-of-its-kind immersive and interactive light installation” that’s open to the public from Thursday December 10-December 12. As part of their “Give Beautifully” campaign, Stella Artois tapped John Legend to write an exclusive holiday single, “Under the Stars.” Explaining the song, Stella Artois writes that “Stars", the installation, was inspired by the feelings stars can evoke like “inspiration, optimism and dreams.” John Legend says that he’s always been “fascinated by space exploration” and so being able to pair “that interest with [his] passion for music” made it a special one.
This collaboration is described as a “holiday gift to America,” a homage to their beginnings as they were “originally crafted as a holiday gift to the city of Leuven, Belgium.” Stella Artois wanted to make the exhibit as real as possible, even going so far as to seek out the expertise of astrophysicist Zoltán Kolláth to translate and analyze unique star sounds (who knew stars made sounds?!). Kolláth explains, “Just as the keys on a piano work together to create a musical chord, each star’s frequencies work together to create the individual sound fingerprint of the star...” Music truly makes up the universe.
An intimate collective of invitees came together to drink the finest Stella (and cider!) while enjoying a very special, 5-song performance that Legend gave. In a densely dark room, nothing but the light of the "stars" filled the atmosphere, as his piano sat beautifully in the center of the venue with a perfectly-filled Stella perched on top. He opened the show with a magical, stripped-down version of "Tonight (Best You Ever Had)", followed by audience favorites like "Green Light" and "All of Me". To finish the performance was what we all gathered for - "Under The Stars".
