The American Music Awards promises to be a lively show this year with the ever-present Jennifer Lopez as host and live performances from Nick Jonas, Demi Lovato, Gwen Stefani and more. With only a few days left before the AMAs are broadcasted live on ABC we’ve put together who we think the big winners will be. Seeing as though AMA winners are picked by fan votes, our decisions were influenced by the artists’ fan base (dedicated fans will vote!) and who had a bigger year in their respective categories.
Artist of the year: Taylor Swift
It’s hard to imagine anyone but Taylor Swift going home with the AMA. Her album 1989 continues to be one of the best selling albums a year after its release, moving around 50,000 copies per week. With her world tour making news every stop thanks to her special guests, plus her girl squad, and amazing music videos, we predict Swift will take the crown!
New artist of the year: The Weeknd
Is The Weeknd really new? He’s been around for quite some time with his mixtapes and spots on a couple of Drake tunes, and it feels as though he should have been up for this category long ago. Alas, his debut album Beauty Behind the Madness was released this year to rave reviews and singles like “The Hills,” “Earned It,” and “Can’t Feel My Face” have continued to dominate airwaves. We’re positive The Weeknd will take this one home.
Song of the year: Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars “Uptown Funk!”
The most infectious song in recent memory has to be Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk!” The funky party anthem gets even our most dance-averse friends and the floor and it’ll get Mark and Bruno another award this Sunday night.
Favorite Male Artist – Pop/Rock: Ed Sheeran
Our better judgment always tells us to bet on Sam Smith who pretty much wins any award he’s up for ... but, taking fan voting into account, we’re going to go with Ed Sheeran. The guitar playing Brit stole our hearts with his mesmerizing voice and incredible song lyrics (who doesn’t get in their feels when they hear “Thinking Out Loud”!?!?!) and we know he's going to take this award too.
Favorite Female Artist – Pop/Rock: Taylor Swift
For all the reasons we've already listed above, Taylor Swift cannot be beaten! Ariana and Meghan have done great this year, too, but again Taylor will most likely add this trophy to her collection.
Favorite Album – Pop/Rock: Taylor Swift 1989
We think you guys get it by now, right?
Favorite Artist – Electro Dance Music (EDM): David Guetta
David Guetta has been the top guy in EDM for quite some time now and it doesn’t appear to be changing any time soon. His track with Nicki Minaj this year was everywhere flexing his ever-growing EDM dominance and we’re betting its going to continue this Sunday at 8/7c on ABC!
